and fernando's

1. What is your weakest theatrical skill.
I suck at singing a lot. LOL if you mean technical, I'm not so good with sound-- Ohms and Decibels and in/out put and range etc., I'm just not good at it. I can put a microphone on someone and run a lot of cable but that's about it.

2. What is your biggest fear? Heights, or rather, the possibility of falling from them. Which is also one of my biggest secrets, and here I am plastering it on the internet. I have learned that if you don't admit to it and don't make a big deal out of it, people tend to not consider it. So if there are a ton of us on a work call and someone has to go up in the lift, I will always be the first to grab the big heavy thing or push the basket around. If you're nice and busy on the ground, you usually don't get moved too far away from it. And if I do have to go up high, I look up or straight forward the entire time and ask nicely that everyone underneath me, shut the fuck up. Chatter underneath me freaks me out massively. And some heights are OK-- it's not the height, it's the ground underneath me and on the sides. Catwalks are usually OK because they're sturdy, and a 30' ladder I can do if there's either someone spotting the ladder, or on it across from me.

3. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? well... 3 more at CalArts. I'd like to tour for a few years, rock and roll or theatre or both. Europe maybe, we'll see. Building things and hopefully doing a variety of different projects with different people. It would be nice to have some sort of steady relationship by then, though I'm not neccesarilly considering marriage. Towards the end of the 10, I'd like to go back to school to do my Master's, though probably in business or human relations instead of theatre.

4. What was your first impression of me (from online to meeting me in person)? I thought you were kind of silly from meeting you online. Really excited about meeting people and making friends, and probably loud and very outgoing.

5. What was your current impression of me? I know now that you are incredibly sweet and rarely VERY silly, that you kind of do your own thing and really like pizza in hollywood, which i have never eaten with you LOL. I thought it was funny that all first semester you wanted to live on campus so you could be near everyone, and then once you moved in I hardly ever saw you! lol, calarts will do that to you.

HOW TO PLAY
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

To answer shannon's questions...

1. Why did you really decide to be a TD versus an SM?
Wasn't learning shit under stephanie young. I work a lot better with a group of guys than a group of girls and always have, and honestly, I can't stand stage managers-- being the only one is OK (i.e. during the run of a show when there is one and maybe assistants) but being in a class with a bunch of people, sucks. Some of them (my good friends) were good and supportive, but the ones that I knew less made going to class hell, because I hate listening to people complain over and over about the 3 same things. SM'ing is a lot of people-work and paper pushing-- things that you don't really need school to learn. As a TD, I'm going to get to learn all kinds of useful things (drafting, welding, construction, rigging, hydraulics, statical engineering etc...) that I don't already have a grasp of, so it's all new and exciting.

2. What's the most memorable thing that happened to you this year at CalArts?
There was so much-- Things I probably won't forget are holodome, invisible glass, having a nail in my foot, making railroad tracks on the coffee house floor, "the theatre" scavenger hunt, riding around on a cart with oscar and adela during toy in blood strike, almost getting kicked out, the first time I made something myself, Mark Mendleson, Candles, and on and on...

3. Stranded on a desert island, what's the only tool you'd take with you?
Leatherman

4. Mr. and Mrs. Smith? What about em? um, they're hot. next question...

HOW TO PLAY
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4.
This week has been fun.

In the process of moving a new roommate in w/ me, her name is kim, she's a first-year dance major. We've been havin fun just getting everything straightened out and moved around and whatever, but I think this is gonna work out for everyone (hopefully) and that will be awesome.

Classes started and go as follows:

Productions: (Invisible Glass and Doctor Faustus) IG is the big puppet project right now, I'm helping DG and Mike (the TD's) with that and learning from them, mostly shop work (wood and metal) and some paper work etc. that goes up in feb, breaks, then goes to REDCAT in late april, and supposedly is touring over the summer a bit, we'll see. Faustus we'll start building soon-- working w/ Nolfo and Adela. basically, I'll be cutting and cleaning a lot of steel- this show is going to be monstrous. but amazing. there's a trampoline in the middle of the stage, as well as the fact that we have named the set units-- stage left is morticia and stage right is Gomez. Lots of work, hopefully lots of fun too...

Basic Stage Management (Mon. 3-5): This semester we're supposed to be doing prompt book work and the specifics of running rehearsals, show, etc. By working on "A streetcar named desire". Although, we won't start meeting for another 2 weeks because Jimmy is in NYC with HIS show. So, mondays off.

Light Lab (Tues. 9-12): It's a lap class. Hurray. Hopefully it will be chill. Most of the kids from last semester's fundamentals are in it, so we know each other. Pretty easy stuff.

Lady Murderesses (Tues. 4-6): the subtitle of this class is "Feminisms for a possible future". It's probably gonna be fun, we watched "Monster" and some dutch film about 3 women beating a dude to death and then talked about why women aren't percieved to kill and how society views women that commit violent crimes, etc. We get to talk about joan of arc and eve and the power puff girls. Hurrah.

Intro To Psychology: theories of mind (Weds. 2-4): Psych 101, kind of. A lot of reading. A lot of discussing mental illness and how the brain/mind/spirit affects your life, your art, etc. I have to take something like it and this one sounded fun.

Playreading (Weds. 4-6): Blah. Actor-oriented waste of time, but required so i have to take it.

Fundamentals of Technical Direction (Thurs. 10-12): Taught by Lorrie, who happens to be the TD at REDCAT. Probably will wind up being about my favorite class and learning a lot from her, which is exciting. She got everyone tickets to see "Flicker" for free at the cat last night, it was a pretty rad show.

The Theatre (Thurs. 4-6): See definition of "Playreading", above.

Props and Puppetry techniques (Fri. 1-4): Also going to be an awesome class. 3 hours in the prop shop a week. We're doing a month on molding and casting, a month doing basic marionettes and a month doing a type of catapults, at the end of which christian intends to have us fling oranges over the shire off the cliff. Today we talked and sanded puppets for invisible glass. Yay slave labor.

In other news... yeah, redcat last night and then art opening, and it was jake's birthday, so madness ensued. I clocked colin in the face... I win. um, boy's interview is tomorrow. the end

So, happy new year, a week late. huzzah for the year that was, mine was swell, hope yours was too.

Still on break from school, i think i'm going home (to calarts) on wednesday, b/c i'm working until tuesday and that makes the most sense. Doing nothing for a month has been fun but it will be good to get back to class/work. Hurray for that.

Everyone should come see "Invisible Glass", opens at Calarts feb. 17 and will be at redcat mid-late april. (I'm "technical assistant", meaning I get to shadow the TD team and dabble in a lot of different production areas, FUN!) Doctor Faustus, which I am master carpenter for, shows in March, 16-23. Call or comment if you wanna come up and I will arrange things as needed.

I gave in and got a myspace so i can post pictures, so i probably won't write in this much anymore... oy.

Why do I have to be so goddamn smug? Have you ever done that, when you run into someone that you didn't get along with or that treated you like crap in the past, and you realize that you're doing a lot better than they are... And then feel all pleased about it? I hate that I do it, but I do it. It's bad karma, I know this. I suck.
Like in one of the douglas adams books (i don't have it in front of me so i'm not quoting it right) there's a passage that says something like, "At one point a car slowed to a stop a few feet in front of where arthur was standing with his thumb outstretched and stayed stopped until he was reaching for the doorhandle; at which point the driver screeched away, spraying arthur with a considerable amount of mud, which was a rather mean prank to play. As it happened, the driver of said vehicle was hospitalized the very next day with appendicitis and had to be subjected to a long and painful surgery. In this way, Justice, through the mysterious workings of the universe, was again served."

Anyway.

Going back to Dan's now... yay...

--misa

look at me i'm updating!

okay so it's 5:30 am but we can overlook that.

Calarts is calarts. Maybe I'm just not a stage manager. I'm trying tech directing without completely switching over for now. more details to come later.

Coming home this weekend and next weekend to handle some stuff. And going to San Luis Obispo for Thanksgiving with my mom's WHOLE family. should be pretty goddamn interesting.

Valencia has too many mountains and not enough oceans. And I still don't know my way around. Hurray.

Might be working load-in at Redcat next week. That would be rad, since I am getting short on deniro.

And ummm... this is a public post... so... that's all you really need to know.

more to come for some at some later time.

peace
--misa

Hey everyone...

Transition to Valencia more or less completed, thought I'd let you all in on what's been going on w/ me lately... Moved in to Cal Arts last monday. Our dorm space, for being a dorm, isn't half bad-- 2 people to a room (pictures later), with 2 bedrooms to a bathroom. My room/suitemates are all pretty cool, which is great. For the most part, this place is nuts, but I think I'm going to love it. It's tiny as colleges go, but way fun-- everyone is really focused on their art, and really supportive and outgoing (mostly). One of the coolest things is that there's an anti-censorship policy; basically the philosophy is that art-making is a lifestyle, so to stifle any aspect of someone's life would be to stifle their art. Pretty much, if it isn't a felony, you can get away with it. Use your imagination.

Orientation week was fun, pretty much a lot of meetings and seminars during the day, and meeting people and partying at night. It's calmed down a bit since classes started, but there's always weekends... Class sign-up was a zoo, though not quite as bad as everyone made it out to be. My mentor made it really easy, and reccomended that all the freshmen start light-- 14-16 units-- so we can get the hang of the way everything works before being thrown into it. My schedule looks like this:

MONDAY
3-5p- Basic Stage Management
6-7p- Institute Dance I
TUESDAY
9-noon- Fundamentals of Collaborative Art and Design
4-5p- Writing Arts lecture
WEDNESDAY
10-noon- Writing Arts discussion
2-4p- The Contract and The Revolution (AKA intro to political science)
4-6p- Playreading
6-7p- Institute Dance I
THURSDAY
4-6p- The Theatre
FRIDAY
Nada-- day for homework, chores, sleeping, grocery shopping, driving home, or sitting by the pool
ALSO- RUN CREW- Schedule TBA (i'll know tomorrow which production/reading/workshop I'm on, there's about 9 this semester) Rehearsals are typically 7-11 pm each night for the duration of your rehearsal period (4-6 weeks usually), with friday/saturday practices and performances as needed.

So BASICALLY, I read a lot.

I came home last weekend, but Dan came to pick me up late on Friday and we drove back in the middle of the night, spent Saturday doing family stuff and shopping for wall decorations (b/c our dorm building was originally built to be a psych ward, so the walls are white brick and kind of scary), went to a show with my mom, and came back up here on sunday. Hopefully sometime next month I'll be able to do a full weekend-- Thursday night-Monday morning-- So I can visit everyone. Dan's good, in case you were curious, it just sucks not to see each other every day like we used to.

For the moment, my computer still doesn't connect to the internet (long story, I'm on my roommate's comp right now), so if you e-mail me it might take a day or 2 to get back to me. I also got a new phone #, leave me a comment and I will get it to you. I miss the south bay a whole fking lot-- the crazy traffic, the little stores and coffee shops and such, the good mexican food, the beach, the bums, the general chaos. This place is nice, but it isn't home yet. Too little and cute and quiet and franchised. Alyssa (my roommate) and I managed to get ourselves lost in Santa Clarita yesterday, due largely to the fact that everything looks exactly the same.

Other things that make me happy: I got new sharpies yesterday to go subleveling with (AKA graffiting in the basement, the entire floor is dedicated to writing on the walls); Our lights are way cooler than jake's and we're not even lighting designers (I took a gel-sample book apart and made a collage of blues over our doorway light, then we got a little carried away); My hair has burgundy streaks in it; My dance class is awesome; I ate alligator gumbo the other night (does indeed taste like chicken, but kind of like fish too), I have the best fridge (rofl); and my playreading teacher, dwyer, is just like slater, except that dwyer is younger and pudgier and talks more.

Miss all of you... let me know what you're all up to... Kim, I publicly apologize for being unable to make it down there this weekend, I have a meeting thursday night and a class Saturday morning, but BREAK A LEG!
If anyone sees Heidi Shultz, tell her she needs to come visit me sometime, and then enroll in 2 more years. And hi to Duvall from me.

This post is long, I bet you didn't read all of it, but whatever. It's late, even though I don't have class until FOUR tomorrow (SCORE!) I'm gonna go to sleep... goodnight...

--Misalyn, out!

Annie is over. Goodbye, precious orphan babies. The show was good, sorry you missed it. And I know you missed it, because it was sold-out! So enormously cool for the kids, and for Nancy... I had fun, I know they did too. **Penguin coat dance!**

So because it was fun, I guess we can overlook the fact that Ken smashed me over the head with a 2x4 during strike. Yeah, I guess we don't have to dwell on that. (:-P I still love ya bro!)

Prom was OK the other night, pictures to be posted later, maybe? eh. Baccalaureate tonight, graduation on wednesday, grandparents coming soon. OKLAHOMA starts a week from monday, because there is no rest for the weary or for psycho rambunctious stage managers.

Dan is good, working all.the.time, he got a new place in torrance not far fr/ the armstrong, so he gets to move out of the ghetto in July. Excited for him. I move in to Cal Arts (valencia) Sept. 6th, everyone in torrance, make sure you send me your e-mail/phone info before then. My summer will be filled with crazy theatre adventures-- oklahoma, sound of music, lil abner, oliver, odd couple, maybe romeo and juliet, and kids' drama camp, so don't count on me remembering things! lol...

Anyhow, that's all that you need to know for now, this has been another news update brought to you by misa-style boredom, enjoy, have a great weekend folks!

--misalyn, out!

I just typed a really long-ass post and it got deleted.

In short:
I survived the longest week of my life. 1-acts RULED. Everyone was really impressed w/ actor's nightmare and the festival in general. My cast rocks my socks, I'm glad to be ending THS theatre on such a good note.
got an 11 (out of 12) on my sr. project speech, SO happy, I needed that grade BAD.
Dance rally was good, I had to do Renegades solo (Misty can't be on campus during school hours, and Jackie was injured) so I had to re-choreograph some of it the DAY BEFORE, crazy, it felt really really good when I landed all the jumps and got all the spins in right on tho. Everyone looked great, the program should be pretty solid within a couple years.
Grandparents came this weekend, they're coming back in 2 weeks for grad, nothing big. Hung out w/ dan all day yesterday, getting ready for prom on saturday. My parents are off right now getting my grad present (it's a laptop (i need one for school) but SHHH! It's a secret, so don't tell me) and when they come back my mom and I are going to find jewelry and make-up.)
Looks like I will be doing A2 work (Harry's sound assistant-- microphone tech) at the Norris this summer for their mainstage shows, "Lil' Abner" and "Oliver". Whatever. Might also accept stage managing assignment for "Oklahoma" at Starlight since Erin is directing, haven't decided yet. If not I'm gonna try to get a job @ the mall or something, yuck, but I NEED to work this summer so I can eat next semester! yup.
That's about it for now, see you @ the beach...
--misa
